Lead Speech and Language Therapist & Assistant Principal who is a registered member of HCPC and RCSLT with experience in an educational / school setting and working with autistic children, young people and / or adults with associated language / communication differences is required to temporarily lead our friendly, innovative team at Swalcliffe Park School.



£40,057 - £45,839 per annum / NHS Band 7

£52,723 - £61,166 per annum / L10-L16 (Broadly equivalent to NHS Band 8a/8b)

JOB TYPE: Full-Time, Fixed Term Contract to 31 August 2023 or 30 November 2023 (Maternity Cover)

HOURS: 37.5 hours per week

Swalcliffe Park School is a specialist day and residential school for autistic young people aged 10- 19 years old with cooccurring conditions such as language disorder associated with autism, dyslexia, ADHD and mental health conditions. The Speech and Language Therapy team is fully integrated within the school and offers therapeutic provision to our young people through whole school and environmental support as well as direct specialist support. We are committed to providing outstanding and individualised care which promotes and develops the quality of life of our young people and their families.

We have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, creative and forward-thinking Lead Speech and Language Therapist & Assistant Principal to temporarily lead our friendly, innovative team of three Speech and Language Therapists, be a member of the School’s Senior Leadership Team and have lead responsibility for our Communication strand of the School Improvement Plan. 



Specific role duties will depend upon level of appointment to NHS Band 7 or equivalent to Band 8/b

Your duties as the Lead Speech and Language Therapist & Assistant Principal include:

  • Work collaboratively with SLT and Management team colleagues to help ensure that the school maintains an “Outstanding” OFSTED judgement for the quality of education and care provided for all students
  • Lead and manage the Communication strand of the School Improvement Plan (SIP)
  • Act as joint Strategic and Policy Lead for Therapy with the Assistant Principal: Self-Management
  • Lead and manage MDT working
  • Contribute and support the effective Referrals, Admissions and Transitions processes of the school
  • Lead and manage the school’s Provision Mapping and the school’s Literacy and Dyslexia intervention plan
  • Contribute to the school’s self-evaluation processes and culture of reflective practice
  • Lead and manage the work of the Quality of Life Manager, Assistant and the Integrated Speech and Language Therapy team within SPS
  • Responsibility for a manageable caseload completing assessment and delivering individual, small group and/or class-based interventions using evidence-based approaches
  • Supporting both the education and residential aspects of the school to create a therapy informed environment
  • Strong MDT working including planning and delivery of joint assessments and joint therapy sessions with Occupational Therapy and Clinical Psychology teams


As part of the Quality of Life (QoL) research that Swalcliffe Park School is leading, the role also includes promoting and developing language, social and communication skills within independence activities and functional life situations. This includes planning and delivering independence lessons and opportunities to support our young people within their immediate and wider communities.

The candidate must be registered with HCPC and RCSLT.
