Visual Impairment Habilitation Specialist / Rehabilitation Peripatetic Care Support Worker / Practitioner that has experience supporting and assessing the needs and capabilities of children and young people with visual impairment is required by Guide Dogs.

 

SALARY: £27,472 - £32,500 pro rata

LOCATION: Manchester and frequent travel around surrounding areas in the North West

JOB TYPE: 12 Month Fixed Term Contract

WORKING HOURS: 35 Hours per Week, 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday (we’re always keen to support flexible working as best we can)

AREA COVERED: As a successful candidate, you be required to travel on a regular basis, covering locations in Manchester and surrounding areas within North West England to liaise with Local Authorities and Families regarding Mobility Services to bring independence and freedom to blind and partially sighted children and young people.

We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Visual Impairment Habilitation Specialist / Rehabilitation Peripatetic Care Support Worker / Practitioner, known within the organisation as a Habilitation Specialist, that has experience supporting and assessing the needs and capabilities of children and young people with visual impairment

Working as the Visual Impairment Habilitation Specialist / Rehabilitation Peripatetic Care Support Worker / Practitioner you will deliver specialist habilitation (mobility and independence) services to bring independence and freedom to blind and partially sighted children and young people.

As the Visual Impairment Habilitation Specialist / Rehabilitation Peripatetic Care Support Worker / Practitioner you will work shoulder-to-shoulder with other professionals including speech and language therapists, physiotherapists and occupational therapists and other organisations including local authorities.

DUTIES

Your duties and responsibilities as the Visual Impairment Habilitation Specialist / Rehabilitation Peripatetic Care Support Worker / Practitioner:

  • Assess the needs and capabilities of children and young people with a visual impairment and producing appropriate training programmes and recommendations as required
  • Plan, implement and review habilitation programmes according to specific needs and capabilities, by giving one-to-one individual instruction in school, home and community settings
  • Provide advice, information and assistance to parents, carers and others in close contact with children and young people
  • Participate in and, as necessary, organise extra curricula activities for Children & Young People with Visual Impairments
  • Conduct environmental accessibility audits of educational, recreational and work experience settings

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

  • Nationally recognised qualification in habilitation training for children and young people with visual impairment or a trainee undertaking year 2 of the Habilitation and Disabilities of Sight Graduate Diploma – IOE (or equivalent) or a Rehabilitation Officer Diploma/Certificate with relevant Children & Young People experience or a Qualified teacher of visual impairment with a recognised mobility qualification
  • Can evidence the ability to work directly with children and young people and their parents/guardians to carry out effective habilitation programmes, including low vision training
  • Ability to liaise effectively with other professionals/agencies
  • Assessment and planning skills
  • Knowledge of range of resources available to Children & Young People with visual impairment
  • Eligibility to work in the UK
