Job Description

UX / User Experience Researcher / Web Designer who is creative and has some experience in Digital Design and User Research is required by the National Lottery Community Fund.

 

SALARY: £50,000 - £56,000 pro rata (including London weighting) + Generous Benefits

LOCATION: London, Birmingham, Newcastle or Glasgow – candidates can be based at any of these offices

JOB TYPE: 18 Month Fixed Term Contract

WORKING HOURS: Full-Time, 37 Hours per Week

JOB OVERVIEW

The National Lottery Family is seeking an experienced UX / User Experience Researcher / Web Designer with capabilities in both Digital Design and User Research to help design and run discovery exercises, and to help turn what we learn into sketches, prototypes and real design assets ready for deployment. You will work closely on focused project teams alongside multidisciplinary colleagues including developers, content designers, grant-makers and product owners.

Working as the UX / User Experience Researcher / Web Designer, along with colleagues, you will have a key role in helping ensure that our new core funding products are user-centred, welcoming and accessible as possible. You will be working in an agile environment, in which user feedback and iteration play a key role. You will also have to work closely with colleagues for whom iterative service design approaches are novel, and you’ll be part of the process of upskilling everyone.

As the UX / User Experience Researcher / Web Designer, your role will have three aspects:

  • To be a user experience researcher, who conceives of, designs and leads user research from initial discovery through to user testing of live services
  • To be a designer for the web, capable of using graphics software to produce design assets ready for online deployment
  • To help others with the design of conversational processes, helping to ensure that phone calls and face-to-face meetings benefit from the advantages that user-experience skills give you

We understand and accept that most candidates for this role will have more experience and skills in one of these areas than the others: we will not be seeking candidates who are equally strong in all three.

Your responsibilities as the UX / User Experience Researcher / Web Designer will also involve taking an idea sketch through to polished design, ready for build across mobile and web.  You will ensure your creative output constantly meets the highest standards and will be flexible in attitude to extend, edit or expand as per requirement.  You won’t be someone who sees their role as strictly limited to one small part of a research and design process.

The role is situated within the Service Design team, a relatively new part of the organisation set up to give the Fund an in-house capacity to research, design, deliver and iterate high quality digital services using a range of agile and user-centred working practices.

The National Lottery Community Fund (the Fund) distributes around £650 million of National Lottery Funding across the UK each year supporting health, educational, environmental, and charitable projects. We are fortunate to be able to support around 12,000 projects each year with grants ranging from as little as £500 to multi million pound programmes. In 2018 we created a new multidisciplinary Service Design team. Our current focus is to replace the Fund’s existing range of many different grant-making programmes with three core funding products, using an end-to-end, front-to-back service design approach encompassing initial application right through assessment, award and subsequent grant management. In addition to developing and iterating these core products, we need to ensure that our technology supports and enables them from online applications via tnlcommunityfund.org.uk through providing a modern grant management system for Fund staff.

 

IDEAL CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

Essential

  • Capable in both Digital Design and User Research, although we fully understand that you will probably be stronger at one of these activities than the other
  • Proven track record of helping teams to deliver high quality customer-facing digital services that placed user experience and user needs at the heart of their priorities
  • Ability to show both design portfolio work and tell us about user research exercises you have designed and undertaken
  • Demonstrate user research methods to discover user wants and needs
  • Demonstrate user research methods to test prototypes and live services
  • Design professionally for the web and mobile, using any of the professional tools common to this role (note, you do not have to be able to write HTML or CSS)
  • Experience of successfully collaborating with colleagues who are not professionals in design and research
  • Contribute to the development and continual enhancement of digital products or services
  • Design systems that are accessible i.e. systems that are aware of the needs of users who may have disabilities

 

Desirable

  • Experience designing conversational interactions, for example over the phone or face to face
  • Experience of working closely with colleagues to turn user data into actionable product/service requirements that feed into prototype development, and influence product direction
  • Building relationships and working effectively with external providers, for example user testing and accessibility testing professionals
  • Experience presenting your work to audiences
  • Experience of working directly in HTML, CSS and other web technologies
