The National Lottery Family is seeking an experienced Senior Software Developer with front-end web development experience (HTML / CSS / JavaScript) and back-end experience with database systems (such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB etc.)

Working as the Senior Software Developer your role will involve building and improving user-centred digital services for the Fund. Our current focus is to replace the Fund’s existing range of many different grant-making programmes with three core funding products, encompassing initial application right through assessment, award, and subsequent grant management. You will also be responsible for building and maintaining other elements of, such as our past grants service.

As the Senior Software Developer, you will be situated within a multidisciplinary service design team. Our mix of skills and ways of working have been substantially shaped by the Government Digital Service’s Service Manual and Digital Service Standard, and by modern digital working practices.

We work in short sprints and regularly share, reflect on, and iterate on our work, with regular opportunities to observe usability testing sessions. You will work closely with the team’s existing Senior Developers, and in multidisciplinary product teams, collaborating with designers, product owners, and other internal and external stakeholders. We encourage collaboration via code review, pairing, showing work in progress via regular show-and-tells, and getting and giving regular feedback.

The National Lottery Community Fund (the Fund) distributes around £650 million of National Lottery Funding across the UK each year supporting health, educational, environmental, and charitable projects. We are fortunate to be able to support around 12,000 projects each year with grants ranging from as little as £500 to multi million pound programmes. By funding good causes, the Fund makes a real difference to local communities all over England. The Fund is committed to putting people in the lead - it is our official vision and our top priority.

You will be a capable Software Developer with strong experience across both front-end and back-end development (we understand that you will have areas of specialism). You will have a track record of delivering customer-facing digital services that placed user experience and user needs at their heart, either as a solo coder or as part of a team.

You’ll need experience in:

  • Building server-side web applications. We mostly use Node.js along with some PHP. We are happy to consider applicants with experience in other equivalent programming languages.
  • Front-end web development using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript with a focus on progressive enhancement, performance, and accessibility
  • Designing and building strong test suites
  • Developing on cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure
  • Contributing to securing digital systems
  • Database systems such as MySQL, PostgreSQL, or MongoDB
  • Modern version control systems. We use git alongside GitHub
  • Translating technical concepts for a non-technical audience, and working well with non-technical peers
