Residential Childcare Officer / Children’s Support Worker (Primary Education) who has a Level 3 qualification in Caring for Children & Young People or the willingness to work towards this qualification, with relevant experience of working with children and excellent communication and interpersonal skills is required for a day and residential primary special school based in Ottershaw, near Woking, Surrey.

 

SALARY: £18,800 - £19,600 per annum (depending on experience)

WORKING HOURS: 42 hours per week Monday to Friday, 39 weeks per year with all school holidays paid

JOB OVERVIEW

We have a fantastic new job opportunity for a Residential Childcare Officer / Children’s Support Worker (Primary Education) who has a Level 3 qualification in Caring for Children & Young People or the willingness to work towards this qualification, with relevant experience of working with children and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Working as the Residential Childcare Officer / Children’s Support Worker (Primary Education) you will join a committed and friendly team at a special school for up to 75 pupils, aged 4 to 11 years, where language disorder, high functioning Autism and associated difficulties is the primary need.

As the Residential Childcare Officer / Children’s Support Worker (Primary Education) you will encourage children to develop confidence, self-esteem and essential life skills.  You will work hard to empower young people, help them break through barriers and experience a range of varied opportunities and activities.

As the Residential Childcare Officer / Children’s Support Worker (Primary Education) you will plan activities for the children to be involved in and work closely with other staff in the school including Therapists, Teachers and LSA’s.  You will communicate effectively with parents and carers, complete daily reports and personal care within morning and evening routines.  A number of children may need assistance with personal care, such as bathing, toileting and getting dressed.

 

DUTIES

  • Be responsible for a caseload of 8-10 pupils
  • Be responsible for the day to day management of volunteers
  • Contribute to children’s personal development plans and target setting
  • Mentor newly recruited volunteers
  • Plan and organise appropriate activities during out of school hours
  • Plan and implement individual programmes
  • Maintain a high standard of both physical and emotional care and help the pupils to achieve in their programme of life, social and emotional skills
  • Be responsible for children’s diets, clothing, pocket money and escorting to out of school activities
  • Form and maintain good, close and professional relationships with parents and other outside agencies
  • To make sure all relevant risk assessments are in place in collaboration with the residential services manager
  • Be responsible for administrating eating and drinking skills programmes, working with SLT’s where appropriate
  • Be responsible for administering medication for pupils
  • Be a reflective practitioner.  Consider and evaluate innovative approaches to the management of pupils with speech, language and communication needs
  • Attend and contribute to staff meetings and insets

 

CANDIDATE REQUIREMENTS

  • NVQ Level 3 in Caring for Children & Young People, or equivalent or a willingness to achieve it
  • Relevant experience of working with children
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to write clearly and concisely
  • A willingness to learn Signed Supported English Signed Speech System
  • Ability to plan and deliver residential education programmes with a minimum of supervision
  • Ability to assess and monitor residential education programmes
  • Ability to communicate effectively with pupils, colleagues, parents and outside agencies
  • Knowledge of the principles of Behaviour Management
  • Knowledge of the procedures for safeguarding and protecting children and young people
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety issues
  • Willing to participate in staff training and development opportunities
  • Flexible, reliable and adaptable attitude to work
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and on own initiative
  • Commitment to safeguarding and child protection and promoting the welfare of children and young people
